About Us

Enhancing Lives, Preserving Dignity, Presenting Choices

For too many people, growing older means giving up the self-sufficient lifestyle they’ve always enjoyed. At Senior Community Services (SCS), we’re working to change that. We’re helping older people remain healthier, more active, and more independent than ever before.

SCS’ four nationally accredited Senior Centers nurture the mind, body and soul of active older adults. At Centers in Yeadon, Folsom, Chester and Darby Township there are health screenings, informative lectures, intergenerational activities, trips and cultural celebrations. Over 5,300 individuals walked through the doors of SCS Centers last year.

SCS’ Congregate Nutrition Program serves almost 23,000 breakfasts, deli or hot lunches at SCS’ Centers.

SCS’ Center for Life Long Learning engages, energizes and entertains while fostering active aging. This semester more than 110 courses are offered at eleven sites throughout the County.

SCS’ SeniorServe Program recruits, trains and formally recognizes SCS’ volunteers, who dedicated nearly 39,000 hours last year to SCS.

SCS’ Care Management’s social workers connect over 1,600 low income elderly to support services such as assistance with bathing, meals, installation of stair glides and resources for light chores.

Senior Center at Home brings therapeutic recreation into the homes of isolated older adults to reduce depression and increase motivation. Staff and trained volunteers log almost 1,189 visits to engage homebound seniors in meaningful activities such as playing scrabble, making scrapbooks and visiting with therapy dogs.

SCS’ Family Caregiver Support Program assists 236 families with education, problem solving, resource connections, emotional support and financial reimbursement for care giving supplies and services.

SCS’ Hearing Discovery Center provides education, support groups and a loaner library of assistive devices for the hearing impaired.

SCS’ Cognitive Stimulation Brain Fitness activity kits contain abundant content which trigger sensory responses and powerful reminiscence. Developed 30 years ago, there are now 360 kits that were used 1,448 times last year with 19,804 (duplicated) individuals in adult day cares, nursing homes, senior centers and assisted living facilities.

APPRISE Health Insurance Counseling and Hotline program ensures older adults receive their health and prescription insurance benefits by providing education and advocacy. APPRISE volunteers consulted with over 3,000 consumers by phone, in one-on-one meetings or in workshops.

SCS' Senior Suppers provides more hot meals for frail low income home-bound elderly than any other agency in Delaware County. Last year nearly 90,000 hot meals and 'brown bag' lunches were prepared and delivered from SCS' five Senior Suppers kitchens."
